Saturday
morning we arrived at the This was our last one day tournament for
the 2003 season. The point standings in our divisional race for Angler
of the Year (this is for New York Northwest division only) has become
a very close race. It is going to be decided at the Sodus Bay tournament,
which will be held 9/6 and 9/7 going out of the State ramp on Route
14.
Fishing conditions on Black Lake were extremely tough as the water
was in a turnover stage. Fish seemed to have intense lockjaw. We had
a total of 21 anglers with only one contestant bringing in a limit
of fish. The water temperature ranged anywhere from 73 to 76 degrees
and clarity was stained meaning (we could only see our lures about
a foot and a half under the water) Sky was partly cloudy and we had
wind gusts all day. The main part of the lake was choppy but there
are bays that you can tuck into to get out of the wind.
The winning pattern: This I know to be true NOT a fisherman’s
story, because the winner came from the back of my boat. We headed
West on the lake to one of my, shall we say now well known honeyhole.
We fished a hump in the bay where water was approximately 4 ½
feet deep on the top of the hump and all around it ranged anywhere
from 10 to 12 feet in depth. It seemed that the secret to fishing
this and getting the bite was sitting directly on top of the hump
throwing into the deeper section and popping your lure back to the
shallow. If it was done any other way fish would not hit the lure.
The fish that Glen and I caught were on three baits. We used a senko,
a Pop R and Lucky Craft G Splash. Glen started the morning with a
Pop R. Caught one fish right off the bat, within a matter of minutes
he had a second smaller fish that would not measure, on this lake
the legal length is 15”, and his Pop R broke, and he did not
have another one with him. After about a half an hour trying different
baits to no success, I told him that I had some poppers in my tackle
box, and that he was free to use any one that he wished. He chose
a Lucky Craft G Splash which was a different color than I was using.
Lo and behold, within the next half hour he put 4 more fish in the
boat and had his limit, and this was before 7:30 am!
He proceeded to cull 3 more fish using that Lucky Craft lure in the
2 ½ pound range. Glen’s total weight for this tournament
was 17.48 lbs. And took 1st
Place.
This is the third tournament in our district that was won by using
Lucky Craft products. So if I may coin a phrase What do you have in
your tackle box???.
