This is the final one-day tournament for the 2005 ABA season. The weatherman was predicting high 70’s to 80’s sunny day and it turned out just as predicted. It was a beautiful day to be on the water. Morning temperature at launch at 6 am was somewhat chilly most of the anglers had pulled their light jackets out of hibernation to fight off the morning chill and dew. We had a partly cloudy morning and for anyone that noticed there was a Hot Air Balloon fest coming out of the Jamestown Airport…which at one point we were able to see 10 Hot Air balloons flying over the western hillside. Water surface temp started out in the morning at 78 degrees warming up to 82 degrees in some areas. We had light winds with very little wave action on most of the lake.

We had a lighter turnout than expected, several anglers had to cancel out of this tournament due to personal circumstances beyond their control. We had a total of 17 anglers. From all information that was provided by the local parks officer…there were 5 other tournaments on this lake going out of different ramps. The winning pattern was jig and pig in shallow water. With the winner breaking off couple of good fish in some heavy structure. All top five finishers reporting catching their fish in shallow water, meaning less than 5 feet with 4 out of the 5 using senkos of various colors. The lunker was caught in 1 ½ feet of water with no visible weed cover or structure, there was only shade from the dock for this fish to hide in.

The top 5 finishers were:

1st Place Mark Hertlein 10.90
2nd Place Ben Whipple 9.38
3rd Place Jason Pierce 9.22
4th Place Doug Curtis 8.29
5th Place Jim Missel 8.05

Big Bass Doug Curtis 5.54 Smallie
2nd Big Bass Jason Pierce 5.36

There were 4 fish over 5lbs caught in this tournament and if I remember correctly 3 out of the 4 were smallmouth.

The final tournament for the 2005 season … will be our 2-Day on Oneida Lake…August 20th and 21st we will be launching out of Boats-A-Float Marina…directions are on our website… www.upstatenybassanglers.com

Remember to qualify for the 2-Day Event at Oneida Lake…you must have fished at least 4 one-day tournaments. We have 26 Anglers that have qualified to fish the 2-Day at Oneida…which is another record for our district. Great job guys!
