Lake Report
10-16-2004
This
tournament was the third of our early-bird tournaments here in New
York Northwest…District #4. October can be somewhat skeptical
in that you never know what the weather will be like…you could
have snow…or you could have 80 degrees and anything in between.
As it turns out on this tournament day the weather in the early morning
was rainy and cold…temperature was in the low 50’s with
the weatherman calling for wind gusts of up to 40 mph. Wind conditions
on this lake isn’t too much of a factor … it is a small
inland lake, surrounded by hilly region. Deepest that I have ever
charted in the lake was about 50 feet. The lake is shaped somewhat
like an oblong bowl. Shallow flats at the north and south end with
weeds all around the edges. Not many long points, but the lake does
hold some quality fish. With the direction of the wind the north end
was going to be the roughest and the south would stay somewhat flat.
At launch most anglers ran to the north end to throw crankbaits and
try to catch a quick limit, which seemed to work for those who chose
to do so. They then settled back and started using spinnerbaits and
plastic to cull their smaller fish. It turns out that the top two
place finishers in this tournament were fishing close to the same
point. One on the south side and one on the north side! The rain subsided
early in the morning but the wind did not. By the afternoon we had
bright sunny skies with the temps getting into the high 50’s
low 60’s. Turn out was somewhat light….. many of us had
just returned from the Nationals and I suspect finances were somewhat
limited. Also, archery season had just opened!
